Help Your Daughter Be a Discharge Detective

“What’s that white stuff in my underwear?!” I remember thinking as a preteen. Naturally, I assumed that (at best) I was weird or (at worst) I had some rare disease. Little did I know, discharge is normal and healthy! Let’s talk more about discharge and why it’s awesome.

“Vaginal discharge” is a broad term used to describe fluid that comes out of the vagina. I like to think about there being two kinds of discharge: healthy and help-me (aka unhealthy).

Healthy discharge flushes out dead cells and bacteria from the vagina. It’s usually white or clear (although it might dry a pale yellow color in your underwear). You’ll likely notice more or less discharge depending on where you are in your cycle, which is actually tied to cervical fluid, an incredible substance that deserves its own post (coming soon)!

“Help-me” or unhealthy discharge is also helpful because it’s how your body communicates that something is off inside and needs some attention. Here are some signs of unhealthy discharge to have your daughter look out for:

I talk about discharge in the Body Talk Basics course, so whether you use that to start the conversation or not, I encourage you to help your daughter understand the power of being a discharge detective!
